Hugging Retriever Spreads Love On The Streets Of New York City

Loubie hasn’t always been the hugging dog though. According to Cesar, Loubie first showed her affection by simply holding hands; a skill she developed around Valentine’s day 2014, when Cesar got out of a long-term relationship.

“She started sitting up and grabbing my hands with both of her paws, and then crossing the other paw over her paw,” he says. “I remember joking with my friends, ‘At least I have someone to hold hands with during Valentine’s.'”

After a while though, holding hands just wasn’t enough for Loubie anymore. She wanted to take things further, really show her affection with a loving embrace.

“Instead of asking me to do the holding hands thing, she just sat up, very close to my legs, and she’d wrap her legs around my knees,” Fernandez-Chavez says. “I thought, ‘This is weird. What’s going on?’ But I let her do it.”

It’s a good thing he did. Because even when we’re not the ones being embraced, seeing Loubie handing out hugs truly brightens our day!
